Health Education Strategies for the Adoption of Moderate Drinking or Non-Drinking Health Behaviors: Using the Transteoretical Model and Stages of Change

Abstract
The Transtheoretical Model of behavior change has been applied to a broad rage of health related behaviors. The model provides a useful framework for understanding how individuals intentionally change their behaviors. Behavior change is a gradual, continuous, and dynamic process through the typical stages of precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, termination, and if not successful in changing behavior, relapse. The purpose of this article was to describe the distribution of subjects according to stages of change theory and to develop strategies of health education interventions to help drinkers change their drinking behavior using the Transtheoretical Model and Stages of Change theory. Total 993 subjects were recruited and 34.6% of them were drinkers (consumer of alcohol). 16.5% of drinkers felt they cannot the amount of alcohol they consumed. 50.5% of those who felt they cannot control the amount of alcohol they consumed were in stage precontemplation. These results suggest a need to use stage-matched approaches for the adoption of moderate drinking or non-drinking health behaviors. Therefore, appropriate health education interventions for each change stage were described in this article.
